Here is your opportunity to take the ARE Structures Workshop with Dr. David Thaddeus in Atlanta. The ARE Structures Seminar covers the Structural Systems division of the ARE, including General Structures, Lateral Forces and the Structural Framing Vignette.

David Thaddeus, AIA, NCARB, is currently Associate Professor of Structures and Architectural Design at the College of Architecture, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He has been at UNC-Charlotte since 1999. Prior to this appointment he was Associate Professor at the Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture, University of Houston, where he taught architectural structures and design from 1989-1999. Professor Thaddeus earned his Bachelor of Engineering from the American University of Beirut in Lebanon (1981) and his Master of Architecture from the University of Houston (1988).

How Wood Frame Structures Work?

This presentation will focus on how a wood frame structure responds to design loads from seismic, wind, snow, and live loads.  This will include a discussion of how seismic and wind loads are generated and how they are transferred through a wood framed structure’s building envelope into the foundation.  Additional discussion of snow and live loads are also included.  Methods and detailing to resist design loads will be investigated.  This includes discussion of wood frame structural components including, structural panels, lumber wall framing, in addition to roof and floor truss and engineered wood systems.

A.R.E. Graphics Workshop

Location: Trees Atlanta (225 Chester Ave SE Atlanta, GA 30316)

Cost: $195 for Associate AIA members, $225 for non-members

Details: The Spring A.R.E. Workshop will be an 8-hour comprehensive review of the Graphic Vignettes covered in the ARE, applicable to both A.R.E. 3.1 and 4.0 candidates. The seminar provides an in-depth analysis of preparation recommendations, test taking strategies, fatal errors, and time-saving techniques. 
 
The Workshop focus on what candidates must know to pass the examination, ways of improving scores, and approaches for developing a logical, passing solution to each vignette.  Registered participants will have the opportunity to submit their solutions to the lecturer after applying the concepts learned in the workshop.  Solutions will be returned to participants with comments and suggestions.
